Boiling Water to Make Ice? The Answer.

Yes, Virginia, it is possible to make ice by boiling.  I will demonstrate.  Start with some water.  I used some bottled water and measured the temperature at 60°F.

Then, put a small cap-full of the water in a vacuum chamber and pump it down.  Sixty degree (F) water boils under vacuum.
Continue pulling vacuum until the boiling stops.

Now, release vacuum and measure the temperature of the water.

The temperature has dropped 14 degrees by boiling away some of the heat under vacuum.  Pull vacuum again and release and see what happens.

There you have it, ice by boiling water.
