Washing the Superball

"Washing the Superball" is a phrase that means you are chasing a red herring (or a wild goose), but it has specific application to scientific or engineering endeavors. In other words, someone is pursuing a cause for a particular phenomenon, but are completely wrong about it. Be patient and I will give you a full rexplanation.

I just coined the phrase and here I record it for posterity.

This is the genesis of the term: When I was 8 years old, I had a florescent bouncy ball - a superball - as we called them. If you threw it at the ground as hard as you could, it seemed like it would rebound 100 feet in the air. And it glowed in the dark.

I shared an upstairs room with my brother, while my two sisters shared the other room at the end of the hall. In the middle of the hall there was a bathroom. When the superball stopped glowing at night, we would take it to the bathroom and wash it. Viola! it would glow again. But as anyone but a child knows, it wasn't the washing that made it glow again, it was the light in the bathroom.

Thus, "washing the superball" means to do something that you think is causing a specific result, but you really are completely wrong about the reason.

An Honest Environmentalist

If you study the leanings of greenies, you will soon come to discover that they are fundamentally anti-human. However, most of them are tools and can't see to the end of the road they are on. That is, they can't see the the logical consequences of the values they espouse.

Except for this guy: (He is still a tool, but at least an honest one.)

His name is Travis N. Rieder and teaches at the Berman Institute of Bioethics at Johns Hopkins. (such a mouthful - Berman, bioethics...)

Climate philosopher Travis Rieder has been touring the country, trying to persuade university students not to have kids – and promoting ideas for restricting childbirth, including tax penalties against people who decide to have a child.

This guy has taken the Malthusian, "green" values to the end of the road. They only thing left is for him to advocate for euthanasia. (I'm not holding my breath. We may yet see that from this tool.)

Greens value everything above human life; owls, polar bears, snail darters, weeds, bony-tailed chubs, coral reefs, mosquitoes, etc. This guy is just directly stumping for the ultimate goal of greenies, fewer people on earth.

So, in that respect, he is honest (and a tool.) I can add him to my list: Nehor, Korihor, Al Gore, Travis Rieder, ... (I know, it doesn't rhyme anymore.)

Americans have become so PC that we can't judge between diametrically opposed philosophies and call them what they are. The values that Mr. Rieder advocates are anti-human and anti-Christ.

Worshiping the earth is mutually exclusive to worshiping Christ and his command to multiply and replenish the earth and subdue it.

Choose you this day whom ye will serve...

Random Thoughts Bouncing Around in My Head

What did Sandra Day O’Conner say to herself when she heard that Darth Vader Ginsberg was going to be on the Supremes? “Always the first, but no longer the worst!” Ditto for Sotomayor and Kagan.

Can any living Hollywood actor play the role of a dedicated and conscientious believer in the literal resurrection of Jesus Christ, the son of God? I haven’t seen the remake of Ben Hur, so I will let you know if anyone can equal Charlton Heston

The Beatles’ song, Yesterday, is able to induce clinical depression in less than 30 seconds. Have any pharmaceutical companies considered using it in their trials of anti-depressants? If a patient can listen to more than 1 minute of the song and still be smiling, then they would know that the anti-depressant was actually working.

SCOTUS – Supreme Court of the United States, Aren’t they a piece of work? In Roe v. Wade they said that a woman can abort her fetus in the name of privacy, but apparently all 7 billion of us on this planet have no right of privacy when it comes to the hyper vapid NSA. Does that cause cognitive dissonance in you?

Simple Janet

As head of the Federal Reserve, Janet Yellen deserves to be lambasted. As a human being we should treat her nicely, but I'm thinking she missed her calling in life.

Instead of being head of the FED, she should have been head of the Centers for Disease Control. Her policies at the FED have put the economy into a complete recession, essentially world-wide. Good for her banker friends, bad for the other 7 billion of us.

What she needs to be doing is cancer research. Her policies could put cancer into complete recession (remission). She simply missed her calling in life. She doesn't know what she's doing as the head of the FED, but she could use those same policies that are so effective in putting our economy into remission at any Cancer Research Unit. She's just missed her calling, that's all!

Central Intelligence Agency

The US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) is an evil and stupid bureaucratic spy organization, basically the private army, not of the president of the United States, but of the establishment. (The president is the PR front, the poster child of the establishment.)

Its headquarters is named the George Bush Center for Intelligence. Is that ironic or what? Is that supposed to be funny? I know that it is named for George H. W. Bush, not Dubya, but still, who connects the name George Bush will intelligence????? What the heck?

And, how about their unofficial motto?

"And you shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free."

Is that blasphemous or what? Or optimistically, we will come to know that the CIA is evil and that may eventually make us free.

Oh, and another thing about the half wit, Dubya. He went to Yale and got a degree in history. Later, as POTUS, he invaded Afghanistan, the graveyard of empires. Obviously he didn't learn a darn thing at Yale, much less about history!

In particular, the market interest rate coordinates the "intertemporal" (i.e., across-time) activities of investors, businesses, and consumers. If consumers become more future oriented and want to reduce consumption in the near term in order to provide more for later years, what happens in the free market is that the increased savings push down interest rates, which then signal entrepreneurs to borrow more and invest in longer projects. Thus resources (such as labor, oil, steel, and machine time) get redirected away from present goods, like TVs and sports cars, and the freed-up resources flow into capital or investment goods like tractors and cargo ships.

Now when the Federal Reserve artificially reduces interest rates below their free-market level, it sends a false message to entrepreneurs. Firms begin expanding as if consumers have increased their savings, but in fact consumers have reduced their savings (due to the lower interest rates). Businesses that churn out durable goods, such as furnaces, cargo ships, and, yes, houses will find business booming, because these sectors respond positively to low interest rates.

On the other hand, other sectors don't need to contract, because (unlike the scenario of genuine savings) nobody is cutting back on consumption. This is precisely why the Fed-induced boom is unsustainable — real resources have not been released from consumer sectors in order to fuel the expansion of the capital sectors. Because modern economies are so complex, the charade can continue for a few years, with entrepreneurs cutting corners and "consuming capital" (i.e., postponing necessary replacement and maintenance on equipment) while both investment and consumer goods keep flowing out of the pipeline at increased rates. But the music eventually stops, since (after all) the Fed's printing of green pieces of paper doesn't really make a country wealthier. When the Fed "cuts interest rates" it isn't really creating more capital for businesses to borrow; it is instead distorting the signal that the market interest rate was trying to convey.

Gary North recently wrote a great article on the politico-economic outcome caused by the anti-nuclear media forces following the Japanese earthquake and tsunami:
