Eclipse Jet

After we put the Kolb away, this little number landed for some fuel. The pilot was on his way to Palo Alto from Wisconsin. If I could afford a jet, it would be this plane or a Cessna Mustang. How's that for daydreaming?

Flamethrowing with WD-40 was so much fun, that we just had to try it with Axe antiperspirant. I think that the propellant is probably butane, so the flame is a lot more vigorous. WARNING: This is dangerous. Only perform this experiment if you have the proper personal protective equipment and training!

Kolb

Another flying buddy, Boyd, offered to take me for a ride in his Kolb Mark III yesterday. It was a great day in Northern Utah, a perfect fall day with blue sky and very calm.

He built the Kolb himself from a kit. I really enjoyed the all around view and the airplane seemed to perform very well with the Rotax 912. He let me fly it for a while and I found it very responsive. About the only thing I didn't care for was the engine and propeller noise. The configuration of the aircraft places your head very near the engine, which sits right on top of the wing.

Falcon 2000EX

This graphic was painted on the outside of N50TG. I wonder what it is supposed to mean?

These blended winglets really give this plane an advanced look. I suppose that they improve performance a couple of percent, at least.

This static wick does not have the sharp pin points like the ones on the Falcon 50 that I blogged about a few weeks ago.

These large, corporate jets are typical this time of year in Brigham City. The guy at the local FBO tells me that the big wigs come to go duck hunting in the area. Man, those are expensive ducks!

Super Cub Slow Flying

This tricked out Super Cub was practicing some slow flying today at BMC. It looked like a lot of fun. Maybe the pilot was getting ready for some bush pilot competition in Alaska?

Kitfox construction

Dave, another flying buddy has started a project. I went to see him a couple of weeks ago. He is the third owner of this kit and the first one to do anything with it. He purchased a used Rotax 912 ULS 100 hp engine to mate with the airframe, which will make it a real performer.

Luckily, an EAA technical counselor in Logan, John Kerr, has a Kitfox Model IV just like this, so Dave will be able to get assistance, if he gets stumped with a particular phase of construction. Of course, the Kitfox factory is in Idaho and I have talked with the McBeans many times and they have always answered my questions, even though I am not a Kitfox owner.

Dave offered to let me in as a partner. However, I can't decide between John's Taylorcraft, this Kitfox, a Challenger, or a Sonex. What do you, the reader, think?

In particular, the market interest rate coordinates the "intertemporal" (i.e., across-time) activities of investors, businesses, and consumers. If consumers become more future oriented and want to reduce consumption in the near term in order to provide more for later years, what happens in the free market is that the increased savings push down interest rates, which then signal entrepreneurs to borrow more and invest in longer projects. Thus resources (such as labor, oil, steel, and machine time) get redirected away from present goods, like TVs and sports cars, and the freed-up resources flow into capital or investment goods like tractors and cargo ships.

Now when the Federal Reserve artificially reduces interest rates below their free-market level, it sends a false message to entrepreneurs. Firms begin expanding as if consumers have increased their savings, but in fact consumers have reduced their savings (due to the lower interest rates). Businesses that churn out durable goods, such as furnaces, cargo ships, and, yes, houses will find business booming, because these sectors respond positively to low interest rates.

On the other hand, other sectors don't need to contract, because (unlike the scenario of genuine savings) nobody is cutting back on consumption. This is precisely why the Fed-induced boom is unsustainable — real resources have not been released from consumer sectors in order to fuel the expansion of the capital sectors. Because modern economies are so complex, the charade can continue for a few years, with entrepreneurs cutting corners and "consuming capital" (i.e., postponing necessary replacement and maintenance on equipment) while both investment and consumer goods keep flowing out of the pipeline at increased rates. But the music eventually stops, since (after all) the Fed's printing of green pieces of paper doesn't really make a country wealthier. When the Fed "cuts interest rates" it isn't really creating more capital for businesses to borrow; it is instead distorting the signal that the market interest rate was trying to convey.

Gary North

Gary North recently wrote a great article on the politico-economic outcome caused by the anti-nuclear media forces following the Japanese earthquake and tsunami:
